Q: What should a Miniature Dachshund weigh?

A: 11lbs or under at 1 year old

 

Q: How long does a Miniature Dachshund live?

A: Depends on the breeding but they can live as long as 20yrs.

 

Q: How many coat varieties of Dachshunds are there?

A: There are 3. Smooth, Long and Wire coats.

 

Q: Are there temperament differences in the coat varieties.

A: If you ask any breeder who has raised all three they will tell you absolutely yes.  For an indepth explanation of the differences visit the Breed Info page.

 

Q: What is the best way to house break a Dachshunds?

A: Get a crate just big enough for them to lay down in, then let them out often. Praise them when they do their duty outside and especially when they ask to go out.  Always watch them, do not give them the opportunity to have an accident in the house.

 

Q: At what age can I bring my new puppy home?

A: No breeder should allow any puppy to leave before it is at least 8 weeks old or fully weaned and healthy enough to leave (breeder's discretion), whichever comes LAST!

 

Q: What are the health issues related to Miniature Dachshunds?

A: Dachshunds can be affected by Epilepsy (seizures), Diabetes, Cancer, Disc problems in the back-this can be genetic or can also be caused from them being overweight, they can also be affected by PRA-a condition affecting their site.

 

Q: Is the Miniature Dachshund good with kids?

A: They can make a great family dog but as with any dog should be supervised with young children.  Some varieties are better with younger children than others.  Always be sure to socialize your Miniature Dachshund as much as possible.

 

Q: Does the Miniature Dachshund travel well?

A: Because of their small size they make a great travel companion but should be introduced to vehicle travel as soon as possible.  Some puppies will get car sick but usually will grow out of it.

 

Q: What plants are harmful to my Miniature Dachshund?

A: Some Tomato plant stems, leaves and rhubarb leaves are poisonous.  Many bulbs of plants can also be poisonous.  Always be sure to contact your local greenhouse and veterinarian before planting plants in an area where your Miniature Dachshund plays or digs.

 

Q: Can I use "people pain relievers" on my dog?

A: You can use buffered or childrens aspirin for pain or as a fever reducer but others such as Tylenol, Motrin, and Advil should not be used as they are poisonous to your dog. As with any medications you should always verify use and dosage with a veterinarian.

 

Q: Can my dog die from eating chocolate?

A: It is never a good idea to give you dog "people food" but if your dog eats a small piece of chocolate it may vomit but the chances of it dying from it without another pre-existing conditions is not likely
